Debbie Hughbanks was extremely honored to have received a Second Place Award in Pastels at the 2010 Art Show at the Dog Show held early this year in Wichita, Kansas. This annual competition is a national event and receives hundreds of submissions from both two-dimensional and 3-D artists depicting dogs in every imaginable setting.
Her painting is of a Briard herding sheep. I was happy with my composition and light and was ...

One of the favorite activities of boaters is fishing. In fact,
numerous new boats are sold each year to first time buyers who
love to fish and want to do so from the comfortable and
advantageous position that only a sleek fishing boat provides.
With so many newcomers and the multitudes of seasoned anglers
vying for the best fishing spots, you may agree that there are
certain rules of conduct that should be followed to ensure that
everyone has a good time. In other words, all fishermen ...

While boating is relatively safe, much safer than driving a car,
there are still enough boating accidents to raise some alarm
signals as to why boating accidents occur. In an effort to
eliminate or reduce the number of boating accidents that occur
in the water each year, specialists have done some investigating
and have found that most boating accidents are preventable if
boaters follow a few simple boating safety rules.
The most common boating accident reported is the man overboard
accident. ...

I stumbled across an old fly box the other day, a very old fly
box. It must have been some twenty five years old when I had
first begun tying dry flies. For those of you who don't tie
flies or are just beginning to learn how to tie flies, the tying
of a dry fly is a very exacting thing to do. While I looked at
this fly box, I could see I was in the beginning stages of fly
tying, at least dry fly tying. Proportions were out of whack,
and hackles were poorly wrapped, but what stood out the most ...

fishing, hiking, boating or cycling in all kinds of weather By
David Leonhardt
Communication in the wilderness is a matter of survival, as well
as convenience. Before even leaving home, communications must
begin. In fact, our first two communications tips do not even
require equipment or gadgets.
"Make sure that somebody knows when you leave, when you expect
to return (or get to your destination)," advises Chad Brown,
owner of
Farm

Why are GPS units showing up everywhere? You might find one in
your rental car, on your wristwatch or even built into your
wireless phone. Anti-theft systems use one, heavy construction
equipment might use one and having one on your boat now seems to
be a requirement. Anytime we want to know our exact location on
the face of the Earth, the GPS becomes indispensable. Like many
other technologies, feature rich GPS units are now affordable
for the average person. So how do you know which one ...

I am an expert navigator with a map & compass but neither is as
effective or as easy as the eTrex.
I highly recommend the Gramin eTrex as a basic navigational
aide. It's also a great starter for learning about GPS systems.
It does everything it's meant to and does it very well.
Garmin's claims of one handed usage are for real, it is easy to
navigate the interface with the solid buttons on the unit."
The Garmin eTrex GPS has one of the longest battery lives on the
market, another major ...

Truly a small wonder, the eTrex takes the best features of a 12
parallel channel GPS receiver and put them into a six ounce
package that is only four inches high and two inches wide. The
result is a unit that will literally fit in the palm of your
hand.
Besides its small size, mariners and outdoorsmen will likely
notice the sleek design of the eTrex.
All buttons are located on either side of the unit, allowing for
simple, one-handed operation that won't obstruct your view of
the display. In ...
